A shocking incident in Sambalpur’s Hirakud Daily Market has stirred outrage after a bull was allegedly stabbed to death by a shopkeeper for eating a piece of bread worth ₹20. The accused shopkeeper has been identified as Shivaram Mahanty. According to reports, the bull, weakened by hunger and heat, wandered into the market and ate a small piece of bread from Shivaram’s shop. Enraged, the shopkeeper reportedly attacked the animal with a knife, fatally injuring it.
In a powerful narrative voiced as the bull’s monologue, the story highlights society’s stark contrast between reverence and cruelty — where the same animal worshipped as Nandi, Lord Shiva’s vehicle, is abandoned and killed on the streets for mere food. “I was hungry and thought the shopkeeper would feed me, but he stabbed me instead,” the narration laments.
Police have arrested the accused, and the incident has triggered widespread condemnation, questioning the humanity of a society that venerates the stone idol of Nandi in temples but shows no compassion for a living being.
